Marjorie Jackson was unstoppable at Helsinki, breaking world records in both the 100 and in the 200 metres. Claude Smeal travelled from a distant Korean battlefield to contest the marathon at Helsinki. Australia won six gold medals, most of which were won for our excellence in the swimming pool and cycling.
